dulwich yoga space

The word Yoga means ‘union’ in Sanskrit.

Yoga focuses on connecting mind and body. To achieve this, yoga uses movement, breath, posture, relaxation and meditation in order to establish and maintain a healthy and balanced way of life.

Yoga in the West tends to focus on the postures (asanas), which range from easy to the very challenging. Every movement in yoga is planned and controlled which is revitalising for mind and body. Yoga postures are intended to relax and tone muscles, stimulate internal organs, and to improve flexibility and strength. When practised in combination with pranayama (breathing techniques), the postures stimulate circulation, digestion, nervous and endocrine system of the body. In yoga terms, one can boost the flow of healing energy (prana) around the body, which nourishes you on all levels.

By gently bringing the mind into a relaxed but focused attention, we prepare ourselves for the practice of meditation.

Titibasana

Hatha Yoga

Karens classes start with a gentle warm up to limber up the body in preparation for the sun salutations which generates some internal heat as the breath and movement work together as one. The classes move on to a number of standing postures (asanas) followed by a seated postures to develop strength in core muscles, knees, thighs and upper body whilst also lengthening the spine & hamstrings & opening the shoulders and hips. Each class winds down with a relaxation sequence (savasana). The postures vary from week to week, building on what you have already learnt. There will be some pranayama (breath awareness) included in the classes.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga

In each of these classes you will journey through different flowing sequences that lead you to a ‘destination’ pose in gradual stages. Each posture
will prepare the physical body for the final pose.

Every class will have a start, middle and finishing
sequence and will include a wide range of asanas. This is a dynamic Yoga class, which will generate heat within the body! You will have fun and Karen
will encourage playfulness within your practise.

This class is not suitable for complete beginners.

Astanga Vinyasa Yoga

Ashtanga (meaning eight limbs) is the path of yoga brought to the attention of Westerners by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, a student of the great yogi Krishnamacharya, together they transcribed an ancient text.

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic breath flow practice that uses a specific sequential pattern of postures. The postures are linked by movement (Vinyasa) and the practice is supported by a deep and even breath (Ujjayi), internal locks (Bandhas) and internal focus techniques (Dristi). By synchronising breath, movement & internal locks an intense internal heat is produced which purifies muscles and organs and expels toxins through the skin and breath, resulting in a light strong body.
Karens Ashtanga classes will follow the system and method, as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois.
